  • Tim Hortons story

Today I read the article from Ontario magazine. It was about the success story of Tim Hortons, which is the coffee and donut chain of restaurant in Canada. It was interesting to get to know about Canadian culture. I pretty much every week go to Tim Hortons to drink some coffee. When I was in my country, I used to drink black coffee or just latte, which was not sweet at all. Here in Canada, I usually drink iced capp. or french vanilla, the signature menu of Tim Hortons. I think I might be a little bit addicted to the taste of them. I summarized the story below:

Miles Gilbert Horton, who was the founder of Tim Hortons, was born in 1930. He started playing hockey at his age 5, and became a professional when he was 20. Even though he was a star of Toronto Maple Leafs, he didn't earn much money. At that time, a player couldn't get money if he got injured. In other words, no play, no money. Therefore, he sold cars or worked at hamburger stores during the summer time. In 1964, he decided to run his own business, which was 'Tim Hortons'. (Tim was kind of a nickname of Miles Gilbert Hortons, by the way.) The first branch was in Hamilton, ON. The signature menus were apple flitters and dutches. One guy named Ron Joyce became a business partner, and the business became to boom. 10 years later from its foundation, Horton died while driving on the highway. After Horton's death, Joyce bought the share of Tim Hortons at $1 million. He expanded the business by developing new menus. Now, we can find Tim Hortons everywhere in Canada. The article says that it takes 40% of market share of fast food market in Canada.
