팟캐스트 Still Processing - Cathy Park Hong

 

시작 전엔 길게 느껴졌던 1년의 육아휴직이 벌써 5개월이나 지났다. 2021년 육아휴직 기간 가장 중요한 목표?는 무엇보다 아가와 눈을 맞추고 함께 놀고 웃으면서 양질의 시간을 보내는 것이지만 그 외에도 뭔가 나의 성장이 있으면 좋겠다는 생각을 했다. 회사 다닐 땐 아무래도 (물론 잉글리시 이멀전 스쿨에 다니는 셈이긴 하지만..) 일 외에 뭔가 공부할 시간이나 여유가 없었는데 이 기회에 영어 실력을 좀 더 쌓고 공부 습관도 들일까 한다. 

 

그래서 최근 듣기 시작한 팟캐스트 스틸 프로세싱. 뉴욕타임즈 culture writer인 Wesley Morris와 Jenna Wortham이 진행하는 팟캐스트로, 문화와 관련된 것이라면 무엇이든 다양한 주제로 얘기를 나눈다. 내가 들어본 두 개의 에피소드는 불과 며칠 전 4월 29일 올라온 가장 최근 에피소드 Cathy Park Hong이라는 한국계 미국인 시인과 대화를 나눈 것과 2019년 11월 7일 올라온 Wake라는 에피소드로 일부 영화 기생충에 대한 내용을 담고 있다.

 

아래는 Cathy Park Hong 에피소드에서 재밌게 들었거나 인상 깊었던 부분 발췌. 두 에피소드 다 정리하려고 했는데 적으려니 다시 들어야해서 생각보다 시간이 많이 걸려 우선 한 에피소드부터 정리하기로..

Asia is a huge landmass and includes everything from Pakistan to the Philippines, so when we talk about Asian American anything, Asian anything, were including so many people.

 

I don't have to just be the voice of Asian America. I can be the voice of America. Why can't I be the voice of America?

 

I have never been comfortable with the conflation of 'black and brown people' as a phrase. I don't know who the brown people are. Who are we leaving out? Who are we bringing in? >> 옐로우는 오래되고 더이상 쓰이지 않는 용어이며 옐로우가 없어질 무렵 브라운이라는 용어가 부상했다. 나 같은 한국인은 브라운이 아닌데 그렇다고 블랙, 브라운 그리고 아시안이라고 하기에는 브라운에 남아시아 사람들이 들어간다는 얘기를 한다. 우리는 새로운 이름이 필요하다고. 

 

Americans wanna taxonomize, if activists wanna taxonomize as a reaction to white people taxonomizing us, fine. I will follow through, but I don't feel comfortable with any of these terms. 

 

The more angry we can be about that together, the more the possibility for something interesting to uncork. 

 

I think what's very healing in terms of building solidarity and bringing community together is that you need rage, but you also need joy. You need both. Rage, joy and play, and also of course you need assignments to think. >> 연대에는 분노 뿐만 아니라 즐거움도 필요하다는 얘기에 공감. 

 

I am also Korean. Koreans are very angry people. -- I am gonna get in trouble with a lot of Koreans "How dare you centralize us. We are not the same" >> 살짝 터졌네^ㅠ^

 

 

새로 알게 된 용어나 개념에 대해 정리

- Double consiousness: 억압된 사회에서 소수 구성원이 느끼는 이중 의식. W.E.B 뒤보이스가 아프리카계 미국인의 경험에 대해 설명하기 위해 만든 용어로 다수 구성원의 시각으로 바라본 자신과 직접 바라보는 자신이 다른, 내적 갈등에 대한 용어.

- Latinx: 라티노, 라티나를 포함해 성별 구별 없이 라틴계 사람들을 아우르는 말. 라티넥스라고 읽으면 됨.

- BIPOC: Black, Indigenous and People of Color의 약자.
